Madrid Open: Azarenka is first to score 200 wins at WTA 1000 level as she reaches third round

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 23 seed, won against German Tatjana Maria 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Thursday.

This was the former world No 1’s 200th career match win at the WTA 1000 Series level.

The Belarusian is the first player to achieve this feat, with Simona Halep following with 186 wins and Caroline Wozniacki with 182 wins.

Azarenka, ranked No 26, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo and Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 16 seed, next.

In the previous round of the tournament, Maria, ranked No 67, edged out American Peyton Stearns (6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (5)).
