Madrid Open: Gauff battles past Yastremska to reach third round
The fourth seeded American will face countrywoman Ann Li in the next round

American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed, reached the third round of the WTA Madrid Open by edging out Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska in a three-set battle at the Caja Mágica on Thursday evening.
Yastremska came out of the blocks quick to win the first set 6-0 before Gauff cound find her hooting on the Madrid clay. The American won the second set 6-2 and led 3-0 in the third before her Ukrainian rival mounted her own fightback.
Yastremska leveled the third set at 3-3 only to see Gauff go up 5-3. The Ukrainian then saved three match points on her serve to level the decider once again at 5-5 before the former US Open winner completed the 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.
Gauff, ranked No 4, has now defeated Yastremska in all of their three clashes – all of which have come on clay. She will face compatriot Ann Li in the next round.
Yastremska, ranked No 46, had won against qualifier Francesca Jones (7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3) in the previous round of the tournament.
