Madrid Open: Jabeur moves into last 16

Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 8 seed, edged out Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 32 seed, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the Madrid Open at the Caja Magica on Saturday afternoon.

This is Jabeur’s fifth WTA main draw win of the year, and the first time she has won two consecutive matches this season.

Jabeur, ranked No 9, will face Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 9 seed, next.

Ahead of her victory, the Tunisian won against Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (6-4, 5-7, 6-3).

Fernandez, ranked No 35, beat Russian Anastasia Potapova (7-5, 6-3) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
