Mérida Open: Stephens gets first win of 2023

American Sloane Stephens, the second seed, beat French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Mérida Open at the Yucatan Country Club on Tuesday night.

It was the 2017 US Open champion’s first win of the season after first-round losses at Auckland, Hobart and the Australian Open, all in straight sets.

Stephens, ranked No 41, will face the winner of the match between German Tatjana Maria and Russian lucky loser Varvara Gracheva next.
