American Peyton Stearns won against Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 5 seed, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Morocco Open at Union Sportive des Cheminots du Maroc in Rabat on Wednesday evening.
Stearns, ranked No 69, will play American Sloane Stephens, the second seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the 21-year-old American beat Hungarian Panna Udvardy (6-1, 6-1).
Fernandez, ranked No 51, won against Spanish lucky loser Angela Fita Boluda (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the Rabat Grand Prix.
