Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, the No 8 seed, defeated Estonian Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the National Bank Open at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Wednesday night.
Muguruza, ranked No 8, will face Swiss Belinda Bencic, the No 12 seed, next.
Kanepi, ranked No 31, benefited from the abandonment of Japanese Naomi Osaka (7-6 (4), 3-0) in the previous round of the Canadian Open.
