Greece’s Maria Sakkari, the No 9 seed, won against Frenchwoman Diane Parry 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Wednesday.

It’s been tough going to date in 2024 for Sakkari, with several early exits across the opening two months of the season. However, as she often does, the Greek has found top form in Indian Wells. Rallying from a break down in the third set, Sakkari has yet again booked her spot in the Indian Wells quarter-finals, making this the third year in a row she has done so.

“I have to give credit to her,” the No 9 seed said after her victory. “She was playing amazing. She’s a very good player. It wasn’t the first time I came back from a break down in the 3rd set. It’s a little bit of experience. I was brave and I went for it.”

This was the Greek player’s 15th career win at Indian Wells – making it her most successful WTA 1000 Series event.

Sakkari, ranked No 9, will face American Emma Navarro, the No 23 seed, next.

In the previous rounds of the Indian Wells tournament, the Greek beat Russian Diana Shnaider (5-7, 6-4, 6-0) and Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 20 seed (6-3, 6-4).

Parry, ranked No 61, won against Italian Martina Trevisan (7-5, 6-3), Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 29 seed (7-5, 5-7, 6-2) and Russian Anna Blinkova (6-4, 6-3) earlier in the tournament. The Frenchwoman was playing in a WTA 1000 Series main draw for the first time in her career.
