Croat qualifier Donna Vekic beat Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-2 to move into the last eight of the San Diego Open at the Barnes Tennis Centre on Wednesday evening.

Vekic, ranked No 77, will face the winner of the match between American wildcard Sloane Stephens and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the No 3 seed, next.

The Croat won against Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 5 seed (7-6 (3), 6-1) ahead of her victory.

In the previous round, Pliskova, ranked No 22, won against American qualifier Caroline Dolehide (6-3, 6-4).
