Serena Williams is to become a mother for the second time.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion announced the news as she attended the Met Gala in New York on Monday, captioning a photo of herself and husband Alexis Ohanian with the words “So excited that Anna Wintour invited the three of us to the Met Gala”.
The American, who turns 42 in September, has long said that she and Ohanian wanted to have a second child to join daughter Olympia, who was born in September 2017.
Later at the Met Gala, the pair were filmed with Ohanian touching Serena’s bump.
Williams last played on the WTA Tour at the US Open in 2022, when she reached the third round. That match is widely expected to be the last professional match of her career, even if she said she was “evolving away from the sport”, rather than officially retiring.
