Stuttgart Open: Mertens reaches quarter-finals

Belgian Elise Mertens beat Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 8 seed, 6-2, 7-6 (5) to advance to the last eight of the Stuttgart Open at the Porsche-Arena on Wednesday.
Mertens, ranked No 29, will play the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, and Russian Anastasia Potapova next.
The Belgian won against Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich (7-6 (3), 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round of the Stuttgart tournament, Shnaider, ranked No 13, defeated qualifier Veronika Kudermetova (5-7, 6-2, 6-3).
