World No 71 Camila Giorgi progressed to the Omnium Banque Nationale final with a three-set win over Jessica Pegula in two hours and 11 minutes.

The 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win means the Italian qualified for her first career WTA 1000 final. She has now won 12 matches against top-50 opponents in 2021, and six against the top-20.

Giorgi had toppled seventh seed Petra Kvitova, ninth seed Elise Mertens and 15th seed Cori Gauff on her route to the decider.

“I’m very happy because actually today was I think great match, even if the second set maybe I didn’t play my game. I lost a little bit the rhythm. But then I came back and was I think a third set amazing.”

The Italian will now face Karolina Pliskova in the Montreal final, who beat Aryna Sabalenka in the day’s first semi-final.

“I think it’s going to be another great match,” predicted Giorgi in her post-match press conference. “I’m just going to focus on my game, like I do as usual, then we’ll see. It’s going to be a good match.”
