Swiatek powers into quarter-final clash with Azarenka in Doha

Top-seeded and two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek reached the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open and stretched her Doha winning streak to ten by winning against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 14 seed, 6-1, 6-4 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Wednesday evening.

Swiatek, ranked No 1, will play the winner of the match between Belarusian Victoria Azarenka and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 8 seed, next.

“For sure I felt like I was able to push my opponent today, and I’m happy that it finished in two,” Swiatek said of her performance.

In the previous round of the Qatar tournament, the 22-year-old Pole beat Romanian Sorana Cirstea (6-1, 6-1).

Alexandrova, ranked No 19, defeated Bulgarian lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova (7-6 (5), 6-3) and qualifier Erika Andreeva (6-0, 3-6, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Qatar tournament.
