Chinese Shuai Zhang beat Croat Petra Martic 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the last four of the Tokyo Open at the Ariake Coliseum and Ariake Tennis Forest Park on Friday night.
Zhang, ranked No 28, will face the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova and Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, the No 3 seed, next.
The 33-year-old Chinese won against Japanese wildcard Mai Hontama (6-0, 6-3) and edged out Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the second seed (4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5)) in the previous rounds of the Toray Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament.
Martic, ranked No 46, won against Japanese qualifier Rina Saigo (6-1, 6-1) and Czech Karolina Pliskova, the No 6 seed (6-3, 6-4).
