Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 14 seed, edged out Pole Magdalena Frech 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to advance to the last 16 of the WTA National Bank Open.
Shnaider, ranked No 24, will face American Coco Gauff, the top seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the 20-year-old Russian edged out lucky loser Harriet Dart (6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2)).
Frech, ranked No 50, defeated Russian Anastasia Potapova (4-6, 6-3, 6-0) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
