American Catherine McNally, the No 6 seed, moved into the semi-finals of the Trophée Clarins when Japanese Nao Hibino retired, trailing 6-2, 5-3, 40-40 at the Lagardère Paris Racing on Friday.

McNally, ranked No 62, will face the winner of the match between American Katie Volynets and Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, the No 7 seed, next.

In a message on Twitter, organisers said Hibino retired on medical advice, but no more information was available.

Ahead of her victory, the 21-year-old American won against Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic (6-4, 6-4) and Slovenian Tamara Zidansek (7-6 (3), 7-6 (1)).

Hibino, ranked No 118, defeated American Alycia Parks, the No 3 seed (6-2, 6-4) and Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin (6-1, 6-4) in the previous rounds.
