American Robin Montgomery edged out Mexican Renata Zarazua, the No 5 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals of the Veneto Open promoted by Regione del Veneto on Thursday.
Montgomery, ranked No 149, will play the winner of the match between Romanian Anca Todoni and American qualifier Alycia Parks next.
In the previous round, the 19-year-old American beat Italian wildcard Beatrice Ricci (6-1, 6-2).
Zarazua, ranked No 95, won against Slovak Viktoria Hruncakova (7-6 (6), 6-2) in the 32.
