Vondrousova withdraws from Indian Wells for personal reasons, handing Kostyuk spot in last 16

Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 31 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Indian Wells after No 7 seed Marketa Vondrousova withdrew before the match at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday night.

Vondrousova cited personal reasons are the explanation for her withdrawal.

Kostyuk, ranked No 32, will play the winner of the match between Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 12 seed, and Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the No 22 seed, next.

Ahead of her victory, the 21-year-old Ukrainian won against Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama (6-4, 6-2).

Vondrousova, ranked No 7, defeated American qualifier Bernarda Pera (6-0, 6-2) in the previous round of the Indian Wells tournament.
