She had returned to Centre Court with fire in her legs and determination in her eyes. But once again, Bianca Andreescu’s body let her down. On Tuesday, the 25-year-old Canadian announced her withdrawal from the second round of the WTA 1000 in Montreal, after injuring her left ankle during her opening-round victory over Barbora Krejcikova (6-3, 6-4). In a heartfelt press conference, Andreescu revealed she had suffered a partial ligament tear.

“I have to withdraw. I need to take the necessary precautions. It’s a minor ligament tear in the ankle,” she said, holding back tears. “I’m taking it day by day. I hope to be ready for Cincinnati, but we’ll see.

Why does this keep happening to me?

The injury occurred just as Andreescu was serving for the match. Though she managed to close it out, helped by adrenaline and the roar of the Montreal crowd, the toll became clear once she left the court.

All I could think was: Why again? I think I even shouted, Why does this keep happening to me? » she admitted. “At one point, I just started laughing. It’s become almost laughable. I do every single exercise I’m supposed to, every day. And yet it still happens. It was an accident, it’s hard to explain.

Visibly shaken, Andreescu also admitted these recurring injuries have forced her to consider her future.

Yes, thoughts do cross my mind, especially on tough days like yesterday,” she said. “But I know how much I love this sport. It has given me so much. I still have goals. The emotions the crowd gave me yesterday… even though I was injured, I was happy to finish the match.

Another setback in a fragile comeback

This new blow halts the momentum she’s been trying to rebuild since her return in April in Rouen. After briefly re-entering the Top 100 in May, Andreescu has struggled to gain consistency, having failed to win two matches in a row at any tournament since ’s-Hertogenbosch in June, where she lost in the quarter-finals to Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

A first-round loser in Montreal last year to Lesia Tsurenko, Andreescu had high hopes of performing in front of her home crowd. But once again, an injury leaves her campaign in pieces — she has played just eight tournaments this season.

Andreeva advances without playing

Andreescu’s withdrawal sends 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva directly into the third round. The world No.5, who had a first-round bye, has yet to play a match in Montreal. She will now face the winner of Maya Joint vs McCartney Kessler.
