WTA Adelaide: Garcia survives to make second round

Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia defeated Australian wildcard Taylah Preston 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Adelaide Open at the Memorial Drive Tennis Park on Tuesday night.

Despite struggling on serve (first serve percentage of 46, broken four times), and failing to capitalise on 12 break points, Garcia managed to withstand the stern test presented by her up-and-coming Aussie opponent.

Garcia, ranked No 20, will play Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 6 seed, next.
