WTA Adelaide: Keys through to final as Samsonova retires in third set

American Madison Keys moved into the final of the WTA Adelaide International when Russian Liudmila Samsonova retired during the third set of their semi-final clash on Friday.

Keys, ranked No 20 in the world, was leading 5-7, 7-5, 3-0 when Samsonova, ranked No 26, pulled out at the Memorial Drive Tennis Park. This was the American’s fifth win in six career meetings (and her fifth consecutive win) over the Russian. It also marked her milestone 150th career win over a Top 50-ranked player.

Keys will play the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the top seed, and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva for the title.

Keys won against Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (6-2, 6-1), Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 8 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) and Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 3 seed (6-1, 6-3) earlier in the week.

In the previous rounds of the tournament, Samsonova beat qualifier Marie Bouzkova (1-6, 6-4, 6-1), Swiss qualifier Belinda Bencic (7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4) and American Emma Navarro, the second seed (6-4, 6-4).
