China’s Qinwen Zheng has moved top of the Orchid Group at the WTA Elite Trophy with an impressive 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4 win over Croatian Donna Vekic in Zhuhai on Wednesday.

Zheng was particularly impressive on serve, firing down 12 aces across the two hour, 53 minute clash and winning over 73 percent of her first serve points. However, it was her ability to break serve that ultimately made the difference in this match, with the world No 18 breaking her opponent on five separate occasions.

Next up, both women will face Jelena Ostapenko, who is yet to play a match at the WTA Elite Trophy this year.

Earlier in the day, Caroline Garcia made a successful start to her tournament, defeating Madison Keys 6-3, 7-6 (3), as did Daria Kasatkina, who upset Barbora Krejcikova 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 in Zhuhai.
