Barbora Krejcikova, Donna Vekic and rapidly rising tour newcomer Elina Avanesyan all made significant breakthroughs on the WTA rankings this week.

Krejcikova back in the tour’s elite

Krejcikova is back where she belongs – inside the world’s Top 10. After more than a year outside of the Top 10, this week the Czech has made her move as she moves from No. 12 up two places following a runner-up finish at the Birmingham Classic last week.

Donna Vekic steadily climbing

Donna Vekic has provided one of the comeback stories of the year on the WTA.

Ending last year ranked No. 69, following two years of injuries and loss of form that left her struggling for momentum, the supremely talented Croat is now starting to fulfil the potential that her junior years promised.

Vekic has been steadily climbing up the rankings all season, with consistent performances across all three surfaces. Having made the quarter-finals at the Australian Open at the start of the year, the 26-year-old then backed that up with a title at the Monterrey Open.

Consistent results continued to help keep her ranking ticking upwards, before a runner-up finish at last week’s Berlin Open saw her jump back in to the world’s Top 20, moving up three places from No. 23. With her trajectory clearly moving in the right direction, Vekic is now just one place behind her career-high ranking of No. 19, which she reached all the way back in 2019.

Avanesyan’s continues impressive arrival on WTA Tour

The biggest mover in this week’s rankings update belongs to 20-year-old Elina Avanesyan, who surged 17 places from No.81 to No.64.

Following a hugely impressive Roland-Garros debut during which she reached the fourth round, the young Russian has continued to make waves across the tour having only recently made the transition from the Challenger circuit up onto the WTA tour.

In her first tournament since that impressive French Open finish, Avanesyan came through qualifying to reach the last eight in Berlin, proving she can play on grass as well as clay.

Now at No. 64 in the world, this talented young player will have her eyes firmly set on the world’s Top 50, which remains well in reach if she continues this sort of form.
