Chinese Yue Yuan, the No 8 seed, reached the last eight of the Austin Open by winning against American Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-6 (5) at the Westwood Country Club on Wednesday evening.
Yuan, ranked No 68, will play Chinese Yafan Wang next.
In the previous round of the Austin tournament, the Chinese beat Australian Arina Rodionova (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).
Townsend, ranked No 83, defeated Mexican wildcard Fernanda Contreras Gomez (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the previous round of the Austin tournament.
