Samsonova stretches winning streak to seven, reaching Cleveland quarter-finals

Russian Liudmila Samsonova won against German qualifier Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Tennis in the Land at Cleveland’s iconic Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Wednesday evening.

Samsonova, ranked No 45, will play Pole Magda Linette next.

The 2022 Citi Open champion has extended her winning streak to seven with a dominant performance that saw her drop just nine points on serve. She saved the only break point she faced and broke the German fife times on seven opportunities.

The Russian 23-year-old had her breakout at Wimbledon last year when she reached the round of 16, but she has never been beyond the second round in two appearances at the US Open, or any of her other six Grand Slam main draw appearances.

Ahead of her victory, the Russian defeated Belarusian lucky loser Iryna Shymanovich (6-1, 6-0).

Siegemund, ranked No 216, won against Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) in the previous round.
