Felix Auger-Aliassime secured Canada’s place in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup after he won his singles match against Serbia to send his side through to Malaga in November.
Auger-Aliassime’s 6-3, 6-4 win over Miomir Kecmanovic ensured Canada one of the top two spots from Group B, even though Serbia actually ended up winning the tie 2-1, when Vasek Pospisil quit in the doubles through injury.
Auger-Aliassime had been the hero of Canada’s win over Spain on Friday, beating new US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in the process.
Spain will join Canada in the last eight if they win the last Group B match against Korea on Sunday while the remaining spot is between Croatia and Sweden.
The Netherlands, United States, Germany, Australia and Italy are all assured of a place in the quarter-finals.
The only spot remaining to be decided is in Group A, where Croatia and Sweden are battling it out to join Italy in the last eight.
Sweden must beat Italy on the final day to stand a chance of progressing instead of Croatia.
The quarter-finals will be played in Malaga between November 22 and November 27.
