Stan Wawrinka notches his first semi-final in over two years at Metz

Swiss qualifier Stan Wawrinka reached the semi-finals of the Metz Open by edging out Swede Mikael Ymer 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) at Arènes de Metz on Friday evening.

The three-time Grand Slam champion is into his first ATP-level semi-final since January of 2020 with the victory. He improves to 6-9 on the season and will bid for his first final appearance since the fall of 2019 on Saturday in Metz.

Wawrinka, ranked No 284, will face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, the No 7 seed, next.

In the previous rounds of the Metz, the 37-year-old Swiss beat Portuguese João Sousa (7-6 (1), 6-2) and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed (6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-3).

Ymer, ranked No 100, won against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 8 seed (7-5, 6-0) and French qualifier Gregoire Barrere (6-4, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
