Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest tennis players in history, has revealed that she has been diagnosed with early-stage throat and breast cancer.
The 66-year-old, who won nine Wimbledon singles titles in her playing days, had been diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time back in 2010 and successfully fought it at the time.
The Czech-born American underwent testing in November after discovering an enlarged lymph node in her neck during the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas.
“This double whammy is serious but still fixable,” said the 66-year-old in a statement. “I’m hoping for a favorable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while, but I’ll fight with all have I got.”
Navratilova has won a total of 59 Grand Slam titles, 18 of them in singles, in her career. She is currently a leading television analyst but will take a break from her duties at the Tennis Channel during the upcoming Australian Open.
