Metz Open: Wildcard Herbert into semi-finals
Pierre-Hugues Herbert edged out Luca Van Assche 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday. He’ll play Alexander Shevchenko in the next round

Wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert edged out Luca Van Assche 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the last four of the Metz Open at Arènes de Metz on Thursday afternoon.
Herbert, ranked No 344, will play Alexander Shevchenko next. It’s his first ATP Tour level singles event of the year.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert won against wildcard Arthur Cazaux (7-6 (7), 6-4) and Dutch lucky loser Gijs Brouwer (7-5, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Metz tournament, Van Assche, ranked No 70, edged out Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) and benefited from the abandonment of Swiss Stan Wawrinka, the No 8 seed (3-6, 7-6 (6)).
