Canberra Open: Dart beats Volynets to reach biggest singles final, faces Diaz next

Great Britain’s Harriet Dart edged out American Katie Volynets 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in three hours and 14 minutes to move into the final of the Canberra Open on Friday.

Dart, ranked No 120 in the world, will face Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz next in what will be the biggest singles final of her career. Diaz defeated Clara Tauson 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the first semi-final of the day.

Tennis Majors

The Brit won against German Anna-Lena Friedsam (3-6, 6-4, 6-3), Chinese Yafan Wang, the No 6 seed (6-3, 1-6, 6-1) and Japanese Nao Hibino, the second seed (6-3, 6-0) earlier in the week.

In the previous rounds, Volynets, ranked No 108 in the world, defeated Elizabeth Mandlik (6-2, 6-0), Australian qualifier Kaylah Mcphee (6-2, 6-2) and Hungarian Anna Bondar (6-2, 6-3).
