Chile Open: Baez wins eighth match in a row to set up final against Tabilo

Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, the second seed, reached the final of the Chile Open by winning against Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-4, 6-2 at Club Universidad Católica de San Carlos de Apoquindo in Santiago de Chile on Saturday.

This was the eighth win in a row for Baez, who won the Rio Open title last week. He will be gunning for his second title in as many weeks when he takes on local favourite Alejandro Tabilo, the No 4 seed, on Sunday.

The Argentine beat Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) and Spaniard Jaume Munar, the No 8 seed (6-4, 6-4) earlier in the week. He will climb into the top 20 for the first time on Monday and could climb to No 19 if he wins the title.

This will be the second time in less than a year that Baez is aiming to win back-to-back title. He also won consecutive titles in Kitzbuehel and Winston-Salem in July-August 2023.

Martinez, ranked No 101, defeated Italian wildcard Francesco Passaro (6-4, 6-1), Argentinian Facundo Diaz Acosta, the No 6 seed (7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-1) and Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 3 seed (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2) in previous rounds in the tournament
