Spaniard Paula Badosa, the second seed, defeated Romanian Jaqueline Cristian 6-2, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Mérida Open Akron on Wednesday night.
Badosa, ranked No 11, will play Australian qualifier Daria Saville next.
In the previous round, Cristian, ranked No 85, benefited from the abandonment of Ukrainian lucky loser Yuliia Starodubtseva (6-4, 4-1).
