Zverev puzzled by loss of form: “I’m losing a lot of matches from a winning position. That needs to change”
The world No 2’s latest defeat came at the hands of Arthur Fils in Miami on Wednesday

Had things gone well for Alexander Zverev over the past few weeks, he could have been looking at becoming world No 1 for the first time.
The absence of Jannik Sinner from the Tour until the Rome Masters in May left an opening but the German has failed to get beyond the quarter-finals of any event since losing to Sinner in the Australian Open final.
“I have been losing a lot of matches where I feel like I couldn’t control lately,” he said on Wednesday, after losing to Arthur Fils in the last 16 of the Miami Masters. “It was similar today again. So I have to look at myself more than anything else.”
Early defeats since Australia
Zverev was beaten in his first match in Indian Wells, losing to Tallon Griekspoor, and though things looked better at times in Miami, he is still a long way from where he believes he should be, even if he is still the world No 2.
“I think I definitely played better here than I did the last few weeks, but I mean, I’m up a break in the third, there is no reason for me to lose that match,” he said. “I go on to lose four games in a row or something like that.
“At Indian Wells I’m serving for the match (against Griekspoor), and in Rio I am up 4-1 in the third (against Francisco Comesana). In Buenos Aires (against Francisco Cerundolo) I was up set and a break. I’m just losing a lot of matches from a winning position right now. I need to change that.”
Zverev will now head to the clay-court season, with the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 his first stop, starting on April 6.
