Wimbledon: Sinner, perfect in Grand Slam third rounds, continues the streak against Martinez

Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, won against Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the last 16 of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Saturday.

Having not lost a set, from early on, it was clear that the world No 1 was not going to be conceding one during his third-round clash, with the Spaniard seemingly dealing with shoulder discomfort – taking a medical timeout at 5-0 in the first set.

Whilst the second set was much more competitive, Sinner continued his impressive form and collected his 15th consecutive third-round victory at the Grand Slams.

Sinner: “First week could not have gone better”

The three-time Grand Slam champion is also yet to drop a single service game, after saving all eight break points that he has faced.

“Very happy [to win] but I think we all saw that he was struggling with the shoulder, he couldn’t serve very well and especially on this surface if you can’t serve well then it’s difficult to play,” admitted the Italian, during his on-court interview.

“So huge respect to him for coming out and competing.

“Every time when you enter the second week of a Grand Slam it’s a very special occasion, even more so here at Wimbledon.

“We try to keep going and keep pushing but the first week could not have gone better so let’s keep going.”

Sinner, ranked No 1, will face the winner Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 19 seed. Sinner will like his chances – having won all of their last four meetings, albeit with the two yet to face off on grass.

Earlier in the tournament, the Italian beat Luca Nardi (6-4, 6-3, 6-0) and Australian Aleksandar Vukic (6-1, 6-1, 6-3). Martinez Portero, ranked No 52, won against wildcard George Loffhagen (2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2) and Argentinian Mariano Navone (7-5, 7-5, 7-6 (6)) in the previous rounds of The Championships.
