US Open: Defending champions Errani/ Vavassori through to mixed doubles semi-finals
Errani and Vavassori have won two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles together

Italian duo Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori had a point to prove coming into the US Open Mixed Doubles event. The defending champions, who also won the French Open mixed doubles event this year, were not on the initial entry list for the mixed doubles draw in New York and were highly critical of the USTA’s decision to revamp the entry criteria for the tournament.
Taking to the court on Tuesday against the highly touted second seeds Taylor Fritz, of the United States, and Elena Rybakina, of Kazakhstan, in the first round, the Italians proved their mastery in the mixed format with a 4-2, 4-2 win over Fritz/ Rybakina to move into the quarter-finals.
Errani and Vavassori then defeated the Czech-Russian duo of Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev 4-1, 5-4 (7-5) to advance to Wednesday’s semi-finals.
In their first round match earlier on Tuesday, Muchova and Rublev had defeated the all-American duo of Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka 4-2, 5-4 (7-5).
