Mirra Andreeva, the eighth-seeded Russian, beat Romanian 18th seed Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-3 on Court Philippe-Chatrier (covered!) on Tuesday morning to reach the semi-finals of Roland-Garros for the second time in her young career.

The 19-year-old, who reached the same stage at this tournament in 2024 as a 17-year-old before losing to Jasmine Paolini, has not been beyond the semi-finals at any Grand Slam, and arrives at this one as the form player of the women’s tour – her 34th win of the season, more matches won this year than any other woman on tour, and 20 wins in her last 23 matches.

The contest never spent a moment in genuine balance. Andreeva bagelled Cirstea in the opening set.In the second, the set ran on serve to 2-2 before Andreeva broke for 3-2, was broken back to 3-3, and won the next three games to close it out 6-3.

Cirstea had lost only nine games

It was their first ever meeting on outdoor clay – Andreeva had won their only previous match at the Linz WTA 500 in April in three sets – and the first time the 36-year-old Romanian, playing the final Roland-Garros of her career, had been outplayed at the tournament since her first-round encounter with Eva Lys eight days ago.

Cirstea had lost only nine games across four rounds to reach the quarter-final and is the oldest player in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam main-draw match 6-0, 6-0; the 6-0 first set today was the one she received.

Andreeva will face the winner of the all-Ukrainian quarter-final between seventh seed Elina Svitolina and 15th seed Marta Kostyuk in the semi-finals. The winner of that contest will be the first Ukrainian woman to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in the Open Era. Andreeva is the first opponent either of them will have faced who is also a two-time Roland-Garros semi-finalist by the age of 19.
