Arthur Fils beat Argentina’s Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-2 on Friday to reach the round of 16 of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers for the first time in his career.
The French No. 22, who beat American Zachary Svajda 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the previous round, will face the winner of Cameron Norrie and No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur next.
The win was Fils’s fourth Masters 1000 round of 16 of the season and his 25th of the year overall. It also extended a remarkable run on hard courts in 2026: the 22-year-old remains unbeaten against opponents ranked outside the top 25 on the surface this season, now 10-0.
After a physical scare in Washington last week, he looked healthy and sharp against Navone, who had come through wins over No. 14 seed Valentin Vacherot of Monaco 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 to reach the third round.
