Two of the players who beat Alexandra Eala this season are waiting in her first two rounds at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open. Saturday’s draw at Victoria Park left the favorites few safe corners, with former Grand Slam champions, rising stars and in-form outsiders spread across all four quarters.
Eala, the second seed, opens against Alycia Parks, the powerful American who beat her in Melbourne this year. The 2026 breakout star of the WTA Tour arrives from a quarterfinal run in Tokyo, but a second-round meeting with Tereza Valentova, who beat her in Doha this season, or Sun Xinran, the junior world No. 1 and US Open junior champion, would follow. Beyond that, Wang Xinyu, Maria Sakkari or Talia Gibson could stand between Eala and the final.
Sorana Cirstea, the top seed, drew no easier. The Romanian opens against Maria Timofeeva and could face Venus Williams in the second round, with Paula Badosa or Liudmila Samsonova possible in the quarterfinals.
Leylah Fernandez, the third seed, is the form player of the field. The Canadian has already won the Singapore title this fall and reached finals in Ningbo and Tokyo, but her opener is against former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin. Dayana Yastremska, Zeynep Sonmez and Katie Boulter all sit in her section before a possible semifinal against Cirstea.
Fourth seed Sakkari has the kindest start. The Greek opens against a qualifier, and the biggest name between her and a semifinal is Gibson. She returns to Hong Kong for the first time since 2016, when she lost in the first round to top seed Angelique Kerber, 6-4, 6-4. “I’ve played some of my best tennis up until today,” Sakkari said, “and I’m very proud if I think of where I was ten years ago and where I am today.”
Four qualifiers will join the main draw: top qualifying seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich, second seed Himeno Sakatsume, third seed Tatiana Prozorova, a semifinalist in Singapore, and fifth seed Alexandra Shubladze.
The two teenagers left in the final qualifying round fell short. Shubladze beat Australian Emerson Jones, 18, a former junior world No. 1, 6-4, 6-2, and Prozorova beat Britain’s Mika Stojsavljevic, 17, 6-4, 6-1. “Stepping out of juniors and into the women’s was pretty difficult,” Jones had said after her first-round win. “There’s a lot of girls in Australia who are doing really well right now, so having all of them around on the circuit, it’s pretty cool.”
