Indian Wells 2026 women’s draw: Gauff faces “gauntlet” draw with Andreescu and Eala looming

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Iga Swiatek headline a stacked women’s draw at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open, but the early headlines belong to a pair of American icons at opposite ends of their careers.
The bracket, released Monday, sets a collision course for youth and experience in the desert, highlighted by a nostalgic return for Venus Williams and a potential gauntlet for world No. 4 Coco Gauff.
Generational Clashes for Gauff and Williams
Coco Gauff faces one of the most intriguing paths in the tournament. After a first-round bye, the American superstar is projected to meet 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu in a blockbuster second-round match, provided the Canadian wildcard navigates her opening qualifier.
The challenges don’t subside there; the winner is slated to face rising Filipino star Alex Eala (No.31) in the third round. Eala, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last twelve months, represents the vanguard of the tour’s next generation.
Meanwhile, 45-year-old Venus Williams returns to the Coachella Valley as a wildcard. The seven-time Grand Slam champion opens against a qualifier, but the real intrigue lies in the second round, where she is drawn to face 15th-seeded Madison Keys. A Williams-Keys clash would mark a high-profile “Battle of the Americans” between two of the most powerful ball-strikers on tour.
The Paths of the Top Seeds
The “Big Three” of the WTA enter the desert with varying degrees of difficulty:
- Aryna Sabalenka (1): The top seed anchors the top quarter and could face a dangerous fourth-round test against either Iva Jovic or the resurgent Naomi Osaka (No.16). Her projected quarter-final opponent is the heavy-hitting Amanda Anisimova.
- Iga Swiatek (2): Swiatek finds herself in the bottom quarter, likely facing Maria Sakkari (No.32) in the third round. Her path to the final is arguably the most physical, with potential late-stage clashes against Qinwen Zheng or Karolina Muchova.
- Elena Rybakina (3): The 2023 champion shares the second half with Swiatek. Rybakina’s path is littered with veterans, including a possible third-round encounter with Leylah Fernandez (27) and a quarter-final projection against Mirra Andreeva or Elina Svitolina.
Expected semi-finals
In the top half of the draw, a collision between world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 4 Coco Gauff looms as the heavyweight matchup of the fortnight. In the bottom half, a technical masterpiece awaits as world No. 2 Iga Swiatek is projected to face No. 3 Elena Rybakina.
Notable Early Matchups
The first round features several “popcorn” matches, including 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu (No.25) awaiting the winner of Ella Seidel and Anna Blinkova. Further down the bracket, Paula Badosa – who traditionally performs well in the slow Indian Wells conditions—faces a grueling opener against Yulia Putintseva.
