“He played better than me,” Jodar said in Spanish after the match.

“Not disappointed. In the end it was a match where I tried to do everything I could, but today it wasn’t to be, and he also played well,” he said. “Credit to my opponent too, who managed to play very well from the start to the end of the match.”

Jodar keeps his Turin and Next Gen plans open

Asked about Turin, where he could also go as an alternate, Jodar said he would wait for the end of the tournament.

“When this tournament is over, we will see who has qualified and who goes as alternates, and we will have to think about it,” he said. “For now I can’t say anything because the deadline isn’t over yet.”

He also left open his participation in the Next Gen ATP Finals, saying he would talk to his team about his planning after a season with many tournaments. “I can’t tell you yes or no,” he said, adding that he would give an answer in the coming weeks.

Ruud did not face a break point in his first match on Monday, when he beat Argentine qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-2.

Struff beat French wildcard Arthur Gea 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the last first-round match on Tuesday, and faces Tirante, who replaced Cobolli in the draw, on Wednesday.
