Italian Lorenzo Sonego edged out Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (7) to reach the second round of the Auckland Open at the ASB Tennis Arena on Tuesday.
Sonego, ranked No 54, will face American Alex Michelsen, the No 8 seed, next.
