Bucharest Open: Cobolli beats top seed Baez to win first ATP title
The Italian will climb to No 36 in the world rankings on Monday

Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 3 seed, defeated Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the top seed, 6-4, 6-4 to win the Bucharest Open final at the Năstase & Marica Sports Club on Sunday.
This was the first ATP singles title for the 22-year-old, who had come into this week after losing eight matches in a row at the ATP Tour level (his last win on the ATP Tour coming in Vienna in late October).
Cobolli had three championship points on his on serve at 5-2 and three more at 5-3 but Baez fought back to take back one break. A lob on the seventh match point finally won the title for Cobolli.
I always dreamed of winning an ATP tournament and it has happened today.
“I feel great. I feel happy. It’s a big dream come true for my career. I always dreamed of winning an ATP tournament and it has happened today. I’m really happy to be here and have achieved my best result ever. I came from a tough moment. I had not won a match, before this tournament this year, and I won the tournament. So I’m really happy about it,” Cobolli said as per a press release.
The Italia will climb to No 36 in the new rankings – just six places below his career high, which he achieved in September 2024.
Cobolli, ranked No 45, beat French wildcard Richard Gasquet (6-4, 4-6, 6-1), Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic (7-6 (5), 6-4) and Bosnian Damir Dzumhur (6-3, 6-0) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Bucharest tournament, Baez, ranked No 36, defeated Canadian Gabriel Diallo (7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-2), Francisco Comesana (7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-1) and Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (6-2, 6-2).
