French qualifier Terence Atmane edged out Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 15 seed, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) to advance to the third round of the Cincinnati Masters at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Saturday night.
It’s one of the major upsets of the day, even though Lorenzo Musetti, Casper Ruud and Tomas Machac had been ruled out earlier. Cobolli, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist, was on a 7-3 sequence in two months.
This is considered Atmane’s biggest career victory, as he has typically played on the Challenger circuit and had not won back-to-back matches on the ATP main tour this season.
This is the first time Atmane win two matches at the Masters 1000 level since Rome in 2024. Ahead of his victory, the Frenchman won against Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (6-2, 6-2).
Atmane, ranked No 132, will play Brazilian Joao Fonseca next.
