Jannik Sinner powers into Umag semis

Italian Jannik Sinner, the second seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the Croatia Open by defeating Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 7-6 (5) at the ITC Stella Maris in Umag on Friday evening.

Sinner, ranked No 10, will face qualifier Franco Agamenone next.

He improves to 33-9 on the season, and 13-4 on clay. He reaches his first semi-final of 2022 with the triumph, which lasted two hours and 18 minutes.

Sinner only faced one break point in the contest, while earning nine break opportunities – but he was only able to convert two breaks.

The 20-year-old Italian won against Spaniard Jaume Munar (6-4, 6-4) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Carballes Baena, ranked No 86, beat Swiss Henri Laaksonen (6-4, 7-5) and Slovak Alex Molcan, the No 5 seed (3-6, 6-2, 6-3).
