Australian wild card Thanasi Kokkinakis defeated French lucky loser Quentin Halys 6-4, 7-6(9) to advance to the second round of the Dubai Open at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Monday.

Kokkinakis, ranked No 101, will play the winner of the match between Daniel Evans and Croat Borna Coric, the No 8 seed, next.
