Dubai Open: Zverev reaches first semi-final since return from injury

German Alexander Zverev, the No 7 seed, won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego 7-5, 6-4 to move into the semi-finals of the Dubai Open at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Thursday.

Zverev, ranked No 16, will face the winner of the match between Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp and Russian Andrey Rublev, the second seed, next.

It’s the first semi-final Zverev has reached since he returned from the ankle injury he suffered at the French Open last summer.

Ahead of his victory, the German edged out Czech Jiri Lehecka (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and beat Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell (7-5, 6-4).

Sonego, ranked No 67, won against Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler (7-5, 6-3) and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 4 seed (7-6 (4), 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
