Novak Djokovic says he and Andy Murray ended their coaching relationship because they “couldn’t get more out of it” and because they “didn’t reach what we both hoped we would reach”.

The two former world No 1s announced their break-up last week after six months together, Murray’s first coaching job since retiring from the sport last summer.

The Serbian, who is playing this week in Geneva as he searches for form ahead of Roland-Garros, said he had the utmost respect for Murray and had grown closer to him due to their six months together, but that it was no longer working out.

“We felt like we couldn’t get more out of that partnership on the court, and that’s all there is to it,” Djokovic told reporters in Geneva.

“My respect towards Andy remains the same, even more actually, I got to know him as a person. I think he has a brilliant tennis IQ, he has a very rare mind of a champion that obviously has achieved what he has achieved, and he sees the game incredibly well.

“We just, I guess, didn’t reach what we both hoped what we could reach in terms of results. That’s all there is to it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t and that’s it.”

Djokovic not rushing search for replacement

Djokovic said Dusan Vemic will be part of his coaching set-up in Geneva and in Paris but said he was in no hurry to hire a replacement coach.

“At the moment, I’m not in need of a coach,” he said. I don’t need to rush in any context. “I feel comfortable with the people around me. In the next few tournaments, we’ll see what happens.”

Djokovic and Murray began working together just before the Australian Open in January, when the 24-times Grand Slam winner made the semi-finals.

But with the exception of a run to the final in Miami, Djokovic has struggled for top form, losing early in Monte-Carlo and Madrid and then pulling out of Rome.
