In a surprising turn of events for French tennis, Sébastien Grosjean, captain of the France Davis Cup team for four years, is leaving his post to become the personal coach of Arthur Fils, the recent finalist of the Antwerp tournament. He replaces Laurent Raymond, who has been coaching the 19-year-old since last December.

The news came in a statement from the French Tennis Federation (FFT) earlier in the evening.

“It is with great emotion but also great excitement that I am preparing to open this new chapter alongside Arthur Fils,” Grosjean said in his statement.

“Arthur is an exceptional player with immense potential, and I am confident that our collaboration will be fruitful. I have warm thoughts for the players and staff of the France team, with whom I had the pleasure of living unforgettable moments, and to whom I wish all the success they deserve in competition.”

Grosjean’s replacement to be revealed after Paris Masters

The position of captain of the French Davis team is currently vacant, and will remain so for at least two weeks. Grosjean’s replacement will be decided upon after the Rolex Paris Masters (30th October – 5th November), according to the federation’s press release. The next captain will also be in charge of the men’s delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“I would like to pay tribute to the work Sébastien Grosjean has done over the past four years for the Davis Cup team,” said Gilles Moretton, president of the FFT.

“We wish him all the best in this new stage of his career. Arthur Fils is at a turning point in his young career and his career path is a model for all young French graduates who aspire to become professionals.

“By surrounding himself with someone like Sébastien Grosjean, Arthur Fils is betting on a former champion who will be able to put his experience at the service of his potential.”
