Halle Open: Cobolli saves match point to beat Fonseca

Italian Flavio Cobolli edged out Brazilian wildcard Joao Fonseca 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (8) to advance to the second round of the Halle Open at the Owl Arena/Gerry-Weber-Stadion on Tuesday.

Cobolli saved one match point in the third set tie-breaker before winning the match on his third match point, 10 points to 8.

Having won his first ATP 500 crown on the Hamburg clay last month, Cobolli is now on a six-match winning streak on German soil.

Cobolli, ranked No 24, will face the winner of the match between Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 6 seed, and Canadian Denis Shapovalov next.
