Top seed Jannik Sinner won against Lorenzo Sonego 6-0, 6-3 to reach the third round of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Magica on Saturday.

In a match that lasted 69 minutes, Sinner extended his record against fellow Italians to 13-0 – and against Sonego specifically to 5-0.

Sinner hit 16 winners and 10 unforced errors compared to Sonego’s nine winners and 25 unforced errors – and his serve was excellent, with 86 per cent of first serve points won.

“I started off well, very solid, not making so many mistakes – he was rushing a little bit,” Sinner said afterwards. “We are good friends off the court, we play Davis Cup together, we have a great relationship – it was tough mentally.

“It was a good day for me at the office. Let’s see what’s coming in the next round.”

Sinner, ranked No 2, will face the winner of the match between Russian Pavel Kotov and Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 32 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Sonego, ranked No 52, defeated French qualifier Richard Gasquet (6-2, 7-5).
