Madrid Masters: Gasquet’s 1000th match ends in loss to Sonego

Richard Gasquet became only the fourth active player to play 1,000 matches on the ATP Tour on Thursday but the Frenchman went down to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Madrid Masters.

Gasquet joins Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco on the list of active players to achieve the milestone of 1,000 ATP matches.

The Italian moved into the second round with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Gasquet, who came through the qualifying draw, at the Caja Magica on Thursday.

Sonego, ranked No 52, will play top seed and fellow Italian Jannik Sinner next.
